I’m standing looking in the mirror and I’m terrified at what I’m seeing. I’m looking at a man who I had hoped only existed in my worst nightmare. I washed my face a couple of times to see if I wasn’t actually just having a nightmare! To my horror, the image did not go away…
I played sports right through high school. I played basketball on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and soccer or rugby on Saturdays. I could get off the ground with some pretty impressive dunks. I could run the 100 in just over 11 seconds. I worked out in the gym 4-5 times each week for an hour and a half at a time. I had six-pack abs and every time I looked in the mirror I liked what I saw. I could eat whatever I wanted and it had no effect on my physique or my energy levels.
Fast forward a few years and a lot has changed. I’m just about to finish a degree at university in accounting and I’ve never been so out of shape. The problem is that I still eat much of the same foods that I used to eat when I was super active in high school. I get takeaways a couple of times a week, eat chocolate and potato chips whenever I feel like it. By the time I’ve finished at university for the day I come home exhausted and don’t feel like going to the gym, or doing anything for that matter.
Despite the lies that I’m telling myself, as I stare into the mirror I realize that something has got to change. At university I spend all of my day sitting down at the computer writing essays and analyzing reports. I’m lucky if I make it to the gym 2-3 times a week and even then I won’t work out for more than 45 mins to an hour. My metabolism has taken a massive hit over the years but I haven’t adjusted my eating, sleeping and workout patterns to stay in shape. I also know that as I finish my degree and start a day job, it’s going to be even more of a struggle to stay in shape.
If this sounds at all like you, then listen to what I’m about to say now. There is a way to stay in shape!!! And if you’re not in the shape that you want to be, like I was when staring into the mirror that day, I want you to know that you can get in shape!! There are plenty of sedentary, white-collar males all around the world that are having the same problem!! But there are also some people out there that have found the solution. They’ve found a way to balance their busy career and family life while maintaining healthy and strong bodies.
How good would it feel to be able to look in the mirror each morning and see a strong, healthy, muscular physique? What would you give to have the time and energy to be able to play with your kids when you come home from work instead of being so exhausted that you just collapse on the couch? How great would it feel to be able to eat what you want without constantly feeling guilty that it’s going to go straight to your stomach?
I’m on a quest to figure out how to build and maintain a healthy, strong, muscular body without having to spend hours and hours in the gym each day, and without having to spend thousands of dollars on fad gym programs. I’ll be testing out different gym workouts and nutrition programs to find out what really works and what is just steroid-inflated hype.
